The process of signal detection, feature/parameter estimation, clustering/data fusion and identification/classification is often called pattern recognition or signal interpretation. With the advent of AI technology new terminology has been added. Today the process may also be called situation assessment and may utilize Knowledge-Based Reasoning Techniques.
