Future computing networks will offer far higher communications performance than current networks provide, making possible a broad range of communications and information retrieval services. Many of these applications will require real-time video and audio capabilities as well as other communications-insensitive services. The ability to receive large amounts of information from a digital network has a significant effect on the design of both the network interface and the attached workstation.
