This paper presents a general description of resonant inelastic light scattering as a spectroscopic method that determines the energies and wavevectors of the elementary excitations of free carriers in semiconductor quantum wells. The modulation doping GaAs-(AlGa)As heterostructures are considered as examples of applications of the light scattering method to studies of single particle and collective behavior of high mobility two dimensional electron systems.
