Lightwave Technology Needs for Long-Haul Transmission

Lightwave technology has rapidly become the technology of choice for the long-haul transmission of voice and data. This has been achieved through the development and deployment of single-mode 1.3 micron lightwave systems. With these systems, lightwave technology is for the first time more cost effective than alternative radio, satellite or coaxial transmission technologies. This applies to both analog and digital transmission techniques as well as to transcontinental and transoceanic transmission applications.
