Limits to large scale isotropy: Galaxies as tracers.
01 January 1985
The Universe on Giga parsec scales appears smoother than expected, given the observed persistence of structure on all scales up to 100 Mpc. Statistical investigations of distant galaxy image distortion and galaxy number density can set limits to cosmological models. Observations of the cosmological distortion effect and galaxy count isotropy are described. No evidence is found for Gpc scale massive inhomogeneities, and the hypothesis of asymptotic isotropy appears to be valid at the 8% limits of the existing surveys.
