Link Budget Comparison of Different Mobile Communication Systems Based on EIRP and EISL

A new method is presented that offers an abstraction level that allows comparing mobile communication of different nature with respect to their air interface. On the transmit side there exists such a metric called EIRP (Equivalent Isotropic Radiated Powewr). This metric reflects the whole TX signal path including power amplifier, filters, feeder cables and antenna. On the receive side so far no real counterpart description exists. For that purpose a new metric is introduced that is called EISL (Equivalent Isotropic Sensitivity Level). It follows the same methodology as EIRP. EISL can be interpreted as the sensitivity a receiver would need to have if connected to an ideal loss less istoropic antenna. Now with these two metrics EIRP and EISL, link budget calculation gets very easy. A link can be established if EIRP minus path loss is greater than EISL.
