Link Restoration Strategies and Performance in Optical Mesh Networks

In this paper, we describe link-based restoration schemes and present performance of several variants. The link restoration variants differ in terms of the detailed failure notification, signaling for connection reroute, and cross-connect activation methods within the switch. We have developed a simulation model to determine the performance of these schemes, and to identify major dependencies for optical mesh network restoration. Simulation provides restoration time performance of the various schemes in three real service-provider networks. We also examine the sensitivity of the results to our modeling assumptions and to the various network parameters.
