Looking at Queues
06 April 1988
We propose measurements and approximations to describe the variability of offered traffic to a queue (the arrival process together with the service requirements) and predict the average workload when there is a single server using a work-conserving discipline. The traffic measurements are not closely linked to a specific model, but nevertheless provide insight into performance, especially via graphical displays. We also propose approximations to predict the average workload without measurements, using basic model parameters.
