Squares cross-section glass tubes have been used to splice AT&T polarization maintaining fibers with an average splice loss of 0.14 dB. A unique mechanical arrangement allows accurate azimuthal alignment without rotational stages. UV curable cement is used for bonding the splice together and bonding protection and reinforcing elements around the splice.
