This is a "Frontiers of Science" Seminar to be presented at the 1986 New Jersey Science Convention. The structures of materials directly relate to both their physical and electronic properties. Different types of bonding can give rise to materials with layered structures such as mica, or fibrous structures, such as asbestos. Unusual physical properties are also seen in some of these "low- dimensional" materials. Phenomena such as charge density wave-driven phase transitions and superconductivity in such materials will be discussed.
