Low Latency DASH based streaming over LTE
07 December 2014
Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) is becoming the de facto technique for video delivery, especially for VoD services. Additionally, 3GPP has specified carriage of DASH over eMBMS, which makes the format defined in DASH suitable for Live Broadcast/Multicast services. However, eMBMS is not available everywhere (operators are starting service rollout) and it is only worthwhile for reasonably large number of users due to the static SFN resource allocation for those services. Thus, Live Streaming using DASH over unicast connections is still necessary and problems may arise due to the low latency and small buffers. In this paper, we propose the usage of scalable video coding with LTE non-GBR prioritization of most important bearers to avoid playback interruptions.
