This chapter presents the principles of first long‐term evolution (LTE) version in Release 8 as well as the first development step with LTE Advanced in Releases 10 and 11. It first covers the fundamental principles of LTE in Release 8, including the key channel structures as well as the key physical layer procedures. The chapter then introduces the enhancements in Releases 10 and 11 including the principles of carrier aggregation (CA), enhanced multi‐antenna operation as well as co‐operative multipoint (CoMP) transmission principles. The introduction of CA in Release 10 is the most successful LTE‐Advanced feature and has been deployed by several operators in the field. Part of the work for LTE Advanced in Releases 10 and 11 was boosting the performance with heterogenous networks operation using enhanced inter‐cell interference coordination (eICIC). Finally, the chapter discusses the user equipment (UE) capabilities until Release 11.
