LUCAS - An Expert System for Intelligent Fault Management and Alarm Correlation

Networks nowadays are becoming increasingly chatty. Huge streams of data are flooding the operation and maintenance center. (OMC). Thus the operator needs a management system that reduces these massive data storms to manageable magnitudes. For this purpose an intelligent alarm filtering system is necessary to interpret the data stream, thereby simplifying the decision-making process and shortening the reaction time. Such an intelligent tool is the first step on the way to knowledge-based network operations of future networks. Hence an event correlation tool, called Lucent Correlated Alarm Simulator (LUCAS) has been designed. This paper summarized the features LUCAS offers and describes the algorithms of the tool. Differences to other correlation algorithms are pointed out.
