Macromolecular stereochemistry: High field sup (13) C NMR and photon correlation spectra of poly(alpha-methyl benzyl isonitriles).

Conclusions in the literature concerning the structural characteristics of Poly(alpha-methyl benzyl isonitrile) have been made on the basis of a very limited number of experimental observations. In this work we describe the study of the optically active form of this polymer by high field sup (13)C NMR and photon correlation spectroscopy. The data obtained indicate that the polymer has some flexibility and considerable structural irregularity. These results suggest that the long accepted assignment of a regular 4/1 helical rod structure to poly(alpha-methyl benzyl isonitrile) is an oversimplification of the true structure, and caution is recommended in extrapolating this structure to other polisonitriles.
