Magnetic Splitting of Energy Bands

A few years ago, Dana and Zak1 argued that 'neither group theory nor effective Hamiltonians lead to a splitting of an isolated band into precisely N magnetic subbands'. Here N is the smallest integer such that some integral number of flux units pass through N unit cells.
