Magnetically insulated inertially confined fusion.
05 March 1987
By combining benefits of magnetic and inertial fusion, a new fusion scheme - MICF has been proposed. The idea is to use self-generated magnetic field to reduce heat conduction from the plasma to the surrounding heavy metallic wall in order to reduce the wall temperature and thereby to increase the inertial confinement time. We present here some recent experimental results using 50-J CO sub 2 laser and supporting simulation results. The manuscript is prepared for the proceeding of the International Conference on Plasma Physics at Kiev, 1987.
