The interaction of infra-red light with the magnetization in single crystals of modified Yttrium Iron Garnet can be used in a variety of devices for optical communications systems. These materials are transparent in the wavelength range which is best for optical fiber transmission, and they have large values of the Faraday effect, the rotation of the plane of polarization of light which propagates parallel to the magnetization.
