Global research on space-division multiplexed transmission systems is currently trying to solve the looming "capacity crunch" faced by optical networks, a pressing industry problem based on fundamental physical limits. Learning from the displacement of copper by fiber some 30 years ago, several important boundary conditions have to be observed and potential pitfalls avoided.
