Managing the optical infrastructure of open access networks

With the proliferation of fibers in access networks the management of the optical layer gets increasingly into the focus of network operators. Monitoring solutions that are embedded into the transmission system hardware are presently the first step to accomplish this goal. When moving towards open access networks sharing a common optical layer among multiple operators, the management of the optical layer will be facing new challenges. Existing approaches and possible further evolutions will be discussed.
