Materials for Photonic Switching and Information Processing.

Future opportunities in photonic switching and information processing will depend critically on the development of improved photonic materials. Materials currently under study include organic polymers, semiconductors, ferroelectric insulators and composite structures. This introduction and the other articles in this issue focus on recent advances and current limitations of photonic materials in each of these materials system.
