Optical solitons have their roots in two very important scientific advances of the 1960's - the development of the mathematical theory of solitons starting in 1965 by Kruskal and Zabusky, and other [1-4], and the development of the laser[4]. These seemingly unrelated developments came together in 1973 with the theoretical prediction of temporal optical solitons[5], and their experimental realization in 1980[6].
