Maximum-likelihood smoothing

Smoothing is achieved by considering the available data as a set of measurements about the required time-varying quantity. Each measurement yields a likelihood function for the measured quantity; the functions are then manipulated to give a value having the maximum likelihood of occurrence. The method has the advantage that it facilitates the optimum combination of data from diverse sources and examples of this are included.
