Measurement - for counting, classifying, comparing, constructing, deciding and predicting - has occupied and intrigued humans since the earliest times. Mathimatics, from the invention of number systems and arithmetic through the emergence of geometry, trigonometry, algebra and much later, calculus, developed in the service of measurement.
