Measurements and Simulation of Multipath Interference for 1. 7 GB/S Lightwave Systems Utilizing Single and Multi Frequency Lasers

Power penalty due to multipath interference (MPI) has been measured for 1.7 GB/s lightwave systems which utilize single-mode (DFB) or multi-mode (MLM) lasers. Theory and simulation agree closely with measured results. Based on this work, interconnection return loss for multi-joint systems can be quantified in terms of reduction in system margin and power penalty.
