Migrate Your DSL Network to a Full Service Network
01 January 2002
Broadband network deployments are taking off in Europe. At present these networks primarily support Internet traffic. This service is provided at relatively low speeds and fixed prices. The service providers are having difficulties in covering their expenditure. If operators want to be successful, they'll need to focus on Triple Play: Introduce bundles of voice, data and video services that increase convenience or decrease price or improve quality compared to existing (legacy) services. The network of the Triple Play operator should provide the means to control the quality of multiple services to many users at any time in a cost efficient manner. Convenience for end-users should be high through good interfaces, secure conenctions and easy access. In order to make Triple Play convenient, user interfaces should include TV and other devices instead of being limited to PCs as is the case today. Recent developed technology advances (i.e. improved video and audio compression technologies and IP Multicasting on DSLAMs) allow DSL providers to implement this Triple Play strategy. In this paper the issues and the architecture that support these demanding network requirements are discussed.
