Mode-Controlled Semiconductor Lasers.

We present a tutorial discussion of high speed lasers, light emitting diodes and amplifiers in which index guiding is used to provide fundamental transverse mode behavior. After reviewing basic laser concepts, we discuss index-guided structures, longitudinal mode control, linewidth, modulation response, superluminescent diodes and amplifiers. This is a chapter intended for a book with the working title "Guided Wave Optoelectronics", edited by Theo Tamir to be published by Springer-Verlag. Any comments or suggestions are welcome.
