Model Based Picture Coding

Over the past three decades, considerable progress has been made in data compression of pictures by viewing them as two or three dimensional discrete arrays of pixels, each of which is specified by a color value. Both statistical and psychovisual redundancies have been explored to achieve impressive results. Commercial systems of variable complexity are now on the horizon that can code moving images into 64 kbits/second.
