Modulation and coding

The principal types of pulse code modulation, non-return to zero, two phase unipolar and alternate polarity, are reviewed. Their characteristics are discussed with particular reference to transmission over telephone links with repeaters. It is shown that modification of the transmitted code enables the transmission to be proved and that the redundancy introduced does not necessarily correspond to a reduction of the maximum output of the channel used.
