Modulation and Detection in Lightwave Systems

Most of today's lightwave systems rely on the simplest types of modulation and detection; On-Off Keying and direct (envelope) photodetection. More sophisticated techniques such as Phase Shift Keying and coherent detection will find increasing favor as systems evolve toward greater complexity, especially in networking applications.
