Network management (NM) provides real time surveillance and control techniques to minimize network performance degradation during periods of stress caused by either traffic overload and/or failure conditions. Its purpose is to optimize call carrying capacity and maintain integrity of the network during these periods of stress. This paper discussed what network management functions are available on the 5ESS Switch. It also discusses how the 5ESS can operate within a centralized NM network by working with external Operations Systems such as Multifunction Operations System (MFOS).
