Observation of Quantum-Confined Optical Interband Transitions in Doping Superlattices

Absorption and photoluminescence measurements on doping superlattices with sawtooth shaped conduction and valence band-edge potentials reveal for the first time the clear signature of quantum-confined interband transitions. The envelope of the absorption increases exponentially with energy and displays steps which can be attributed to calculated transition energies. Photoluminescence measurements on the sawtooth superlattice reveal several transitions of comparable intensity. Not only the groundstate but also excited state transitions are observed.
