A general queueing theory model is given that can be used for the optimisation of network configurations with respect to time and cost. Most multi-channel problems are reduced to single-channel problems with modified processing rates. Poisson input rates and exponential holding times are assumed. The optimal configuration of a communications network, subject to equipment and cost constraints, is determined in an example.
