The Cloud has become a compelling infrastructure to host a number of diverse services and applications with different operational and service requirements. New trends are showing an increasingly complex landscape comprised of a wide variety of applications ranging from mission critical services, such as network control functions, to time-critical functions such as gaming or financial services. However, todays Cloud management systems are largely oblivious to high performance enterprise-grade needs for quality of service and performance guarantees. Therefore, this new demand is calling for novel Cloud solutions that would provide service performance guarantees, meet on-demand locality needs, satisfy mix of centralized and distributed deployment and low latency requirements. This talk will discuss the opportunities and the research challenges of realizing Cloud solutions able to satisfy the needs of the upcoming Cloud applications at scale. Specifically, real time data from end-users and infrastructure would play a significant role in learning the contextual factors of different applications and leveraging those to proactively respond to their requirements.
