This title represents a tutorial series of 4 1-hour lectures devoted to a consideration of practical and future battery systems (2 Lectures) and to the current (VLSI) and future semiconductor device technology (2 lectures), with emphasis on the materials aspects in both the battery and semiconductor areas. The lectures will be based entirely on material which has been previously released and/or is in the literature. The primary topics to be considered include (1) the lead-acid round cell, based on the work reported in the Sept., 1970 issue of BSTJ devoted to this subject; (2) lithium rechargeable battery efforts with emphasis on the intercalation cathode materials such as NbSe sub 3, based on published and recently released material on the Li/NbSe sub 3 system; (3) VLSI technology, based to a large extent on the material in recent books by Sze of AT&T BL and other published material; and (4) heteroepitaxial developments and prospects, based on material from Panish and Sze, published and/or released for publication, and from other published material.
