Parity Check Encoded QPSK for Rate Adaptation in Coherent DSP-Based Receivers

An ultra-short rate-1/2 parity check code is used to switch the net data rate of a coherent QPSK transmission system to the equivalent of a BPSK system. Simulation and experimental comparison of parity check encoded (PC)-QPSK and BPSK show an improvement in receiver sensitivity of 0.8 dB at the soft-FEC threshold.
