Phase-Modulated OOK Formats at 40G and 160G
01 January 2006
The data rate of transmission systems has been historically increasing due to some inherent advantages of high-speed signaling, including reduced cost per bit, minimized equipment footprint for a given capacity and simplified network management. Fig. 1 shows the time when various generations of WDM transmission systems became commercially available. In addition, there have been 85G and 107G transmission systems reported in 2004-2006. The next data rate commercial fiber-optic communications will likely be 160Gb/s. Currently, 40-Gb/s products are emerging as the next generation transport platform while 160-Gb/s systems may eventually become a major component in the future network infrastructure.
