Planning for Growth of a Metropolitan Area Telecommunications Network

As a part of its world wide operations, AT&T recently conducted a joint telecommunications network planning study for a large metropolitan area. This effort was carried out by the planning engineers of the telephone administration involved and AT&T Bell Laboratories. The objectives of the study were to plan for a million lines growth over a twenty (20) year period, and to modernize the network to an all digital target network in the process. Four separate but related study areas, namely wire- centering, trunking, switching evolution and transmission, were covered using various AT&T computer-based planning tools to achieve the overall objective.
