The interaction of intrachannel effects and polarization mode dispersion in 40-Gb/s transmission-systems can support signal propagation by reducing the nonlinear impairments. The phenomenon is experimentally observed in a 400-km ON-OFF keying transmission. Simulations predict its impact in ultra-long-haul intensity and phase modulated systems.
