Recent diffraction studies of coherent, single crystal Dy-Y1 and Gd-Y2 synthetic superlattices have shown that the magnetic structures are coherent across several intervening, nonmagnetic Y layers. Both RKKY and spin density wave interlayer interaction mechanisms have been suggested. The magnetic structures of Gd-Dy superlattices determined by neutron diffraction will be reported and discussed in relation to these possible coupling schemes.
