A general review is presented of communication technology. The first part discusses broad communication requirements, operational concepts, and future trends. Subsequent sections of the paper deal with transmission media, noise sources, extension of frequency ranges, improvements in terminal devices, advances in modulation, coding, and data processing. Mention is also made of new switching techniques for speedier establishment of connections with a consequent improvement in the utilization of existing facilities.
