Power conversion efficiency of various Erbium doped fibers is characterized at a wavelength of 1585 nm by using a two stage amplifier and a C-band ASE filter. There is a good agreement between experiment and simulation. Trade-off exists between Erbium doping concentration and pair-induced quenching. High Al doping and optimization of NA can help improve the efficiency, and Erbium doping region has a significant impact on the performance of low cutoff Erbium doped fibers.
