When the demand for wireless data from cellular networks becomes even a small fraction of wireline data, this demand will completely overwhelm the ability of even third generation systems. Traditional technologies to improve network capacity, such as sectorization and cell splitting, while being helpful, do have limitations. Bases and terminals with multiple antennas along with a favorable radio propagation channel and a signaling scheme called Bell Labs Layered Space Time or BLAST may be the solution for the wireless bottleneck.
