Probabilistic shaping: a technique for reach extension of QAM systems with superior flexibility

Probabilistic shaping of QAM constellations has been investigated intensively for its application in optical transmission system. Beside an improvement of maximum transmission distances by operating those systems closer to the Shannon limit it exhibits an extreme flexibility without any given granularity. In this paper we review the application of probabilistic shaping in optical transmission systems and demonstrate the limitations for highest capacity transmission channels.
