Repeaterless Transmission with Negative Penalty over 285 km at 10-Gb/s Using a Chirp Managed Laser and Tunable Dispersion Compensator

We demonstrate a record repeaterless transmission distance of 285 km over standard single mode fiber at 10.664 Gb/s. A span loss of 60 dB with a total dispersion of 4850 ps/nm were simultaneously overcome using a chirp managed laser and tunable dispersion compensator. High launch power coupled with low extinction ratio are shown to be key parameters in achieving long unrepeatered links.
