Holland is divided into a number of zones and each zone into a number of sectors for the switching of long-distance telephone traffic on a national numbering scheme basis. Each zone incorporates a main district exchange and each sector a secondary exchange with associated tertiary exchanges. Time zone metering applies. Co-ordination with the national dialling scheme required certain modifications to the early equipment and operating practices in the Hague zone. The article describes general details of the Hague main district exchange, the Leyden secondary exchange and associated register and registerless type tertiary exchanges. Junction diagrams, floor plans and general principles of local traffic routing and long-distance traffic routing in relation to the national dialling scheme are discussed.
