We consider the problem of detecting a deterministic signal in the presence of random transient disturbance and white Gaussian noise. While the white noise is, in essence, a 'many-independent-sample' object and, therefore, its adverse effect can be greatly reduced by coherent integration (i.e., the matched filter), the transient disturbance is a 'single-sample' object and its treatment must be semi-deterministic.
