The AT&T Signaling System No. 7 network is described in the context of its key role as part of the AT&T Intelligent Network. The main areas of emphasis are the network architecture, the standards recommendations employed, relationships to global and other North American networks, and how the signaling network supports the evolving set of ISDN and other intelligent network service applications. Specific methods for achieving high quality network performance and operation are described. Also, a new technique is outlined that helps AT&T introduce new signaling technology and new network service applications to ensure high quality customer service. Part of that effort involves the use of a special Integrated Test Network (ITN) which is described.
