This book has been written for the individual with a reasonably good background in mathematics, engineering or physics who wishes to become familiar with, or more knowledgeable about, the concepts and mathematical techniques which come into play in the design, analysis and use of active sensing systems for civilian, military and scientific purposes. By active sensing systems we mean systems which transmit a signal, with the intention that the signal will be scattered by an object of interest, and derive information about the object on the basis of information extracted from the received scattering; the scattered signal is sometimes referred to as the echo.
