Simultaneous reception of both quadratures of 40-Gb/s DQPSK using a simple monolithic demodulator

The optical differential quadrature phase shift keying (DQPSK) format traditionally requires two separate Mach-Zehnder interferometers to demodulate the signal. Here we demonstrate a novel silica waveguide device that demodulates both quadratures in a single Mach-Zehnder interferometer. We also present simultaneous measurement of both quadratures of a 42.7-Gb/s DQPSK signal.
