Single-crystal yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) phosphors activated with rare-earth ions have been incorporated into cathode ray tubes. These transparent cathodoluminescent phosphors have been excited with high powered electron beams to produce displays of uniform output, high brightness, and with almost no loss of intensity with time. In addition, the crystal phosphors have been shown to be capable of resolution equal to that of the exciting electron beam and, because of their non-scattering nature, produce an image with excellent contrast. The advantages and drawbacks of the YAG crystal phosphors are summarized in this paper, which has been submitted to the journal of the Society for Information Display for inclusion in their May, 1987 issue.
